GRAND CROSSING — A local nonprofit is seeking donations for its organization to promote breast cancer awareness on Saturday.

The Carolyn and Karen Spiritual Healing House is holding a prayer breakfast at MW St. John Grand Lodge, 7443 S. Ingelside from 9 a.m.-noon.

Organizers request a ticket donation of $20 for adults and $10 for children.

Breast cancer survivors will share their personal stories, and there will be a presentation from health experts to create awareness and encourage early detection.

Co-founder Quency Hampton, who is a breast cancer survivor, said it's important for African-American women to know how breast cancer affects them.

"There are disparities between black and white women," she said, adding that some black women need to have a mammogram taken before the recommended age, which is 40, according to the American Cancer Society.
