DOWNTOWN — A bicyclist riding near the Lakefront Trail Thursday morning says she was knocked off her bike by a man who grabbed it and rode off.
DNAinfo Chicago witnessed the victim telling police about the robbery, which happened about 7:15 a.m. Thursday on the Lake Shore Drive bridge over the Chicago River, she said.
Police told the victim a similar incident occurred earlier this week, and that the suspect may be a repeat offender.
The victim did not respond to requests for comment, but did take to Reddit to share her story. She described the suspect as a Hispanic man in his 20s wearing a dark raincoat who pushed her down, took her bike and rode it north on the Lake Shore Drive bridge.
The woman reported she was not seriously injured during the robbery. Her black hybrid Crossroads bike is valued at $440. The suspect was not armed, she said.
Tyler Doerschuk of the WanderBikes stand on the Chicago Riverwalk was not aware of the bike robbery, but advised bicyclists to travel in groups when possible.
Joshua Mei, an assistant manager of the Wheel Fun Rentals stand on the Chicago Riverwalk, also was not aware of the robbery, but said one of his four-wheeled "big bikes" was stolen from the store Wednesday. He advised bicyclists to remain alert, even when traveling Downtown.
"Just be aware of your surroundings," he said.
Police did not have immediate information on the robbery.
