DOWNTOWN — Krispy Kreme is bringing its glazed doughnut stores back to Chicago.

The Winston-Salem, N.C.-based chain said Tuesday that it had signed an agreement with a franchisee who plans to open eight new Krispy Kreme stores throughout the Chicago area, including at least one Downtown location.

“We have a very dedicated team that is eager to turn on Krispy Kreme’s signature ‘Hot Doughnuts Now’ sign throughout the area,” the franchisee, Rogelio Tovar, said in a statement. “We look forward to exceeding our customer’s demands for Krispy Kreme’s highly regarded sweet treats and great tasting line of coffees.”

It is unknown where or when exactly the stores would open. Tuesday's announcement simply said the new stores will arrive "over the next few years."

Krispy Kreme once had at least two locations in the city, at 175 W. Jackson Blvd. and at 4455 S. Pulaski, but they closed just a few years after opening. The chain, known for publicly displaying the glazed doughnuts it bakes in-store, currently has Illinois stores open in suburban Elk Grove Village and downstate Bloomington.
