CHICAGO — A 22-year-old man died after he was stabbed when an argument turned physical Sunday night in Englewood, police said.

Around 11:15 p.m., the man was arguing with a man in the 6000 block of South Justine Street when he was stabbed in his stomach and back, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Estrada said.

Nija Richardson, 23, of the 6000 block of South Justine Street, died around 1:07 a.m. Monday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Rubye McCullough, 57, was awakened by loud banging at her door around 2:30 a.m. Monday. She assumed it was some of her friends still enjoying the night, but was distraught when she opened her door to find detectives, she said.

The detectives were searching for her nephew, who they believed may have fatally stabbed the victim, who lives next door to McCullough.

McCullough said that possibility didn't make sense to her.

"They were friends. [Sunday] they were dancing in the street, footworking and wishing each other a Happy Father's Day. I heard them having a good time," said McCullough, adding the two had been friends for roughly two or three years after her nephew began dating a girl on the block.

But at some point things turned ugly and a fight broke out.

"This wasn't supposed to happen like this. That baby ain't supposed to be dead," said McCullough, urging her nephew to come home and talk to authorities to straighten the situation out.

No one is in custody for the stabbing.
