CHICAGO — Three people were taken to the hospital after a car and Metra South Chicago line train collided Friday afternoon in South Shore, officials said.

The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. at 72nd Street and Exchange Avenue, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Two people were taken to Northwestern Hospital and another person was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, said Metra spokeswoman Meg Riley.

A witness told DNAinfo Chicago that two of those hurt in the accident were a mother and baby. The mother appeared to be critically wounded, he said.

Metra police and investigators were at the scene working to free the car, a blue Mercury Sable, from under the train.

Riley said the accident is being investigated, and the circumstances of the crash were unclear as of Friday afternoon.
