BRIDGEPORT — Have a tattered and worn flag you’re hoping to get rid of?

Show up to 1300 W. Exchange Ave. on June 14 at 11 a.m. That’s where representatives of the 11th Ward — with former Ald. James A. Balcer — will host a flag disposal ceremony.

Billed as the largest flag ceremony in the country, the event welcomes local residents to dispose of their American, City of Chicago, Prisoners of War-Missing in Action flags in an “honorable” way.

The City of Chicago plans to burn thousands of unserviceable flags once flown over city buildings.

Federal law says a flag, “when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
