CHICAGO — A 57-year-old man was seriously wounded in a stabbing at the Art Institute of Chicago Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Around 4:45 p.m., the man was stabbed in his neck in the 100 block of East Monroe Drive, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, Lemmon said.

Wednesday evening, crime scene tape was wrapped around trees inside the Art Institute's gardens.

An Art Institute spokeswoman confirmed the incident occurred in the museum's south garden, but referred all questions to police.

Loop resident Nicole Carey, 31, said she was shocked to hear about the stabbing.

"I'm surprised that something like this would happen outside the art museum, especially on a day like today with so many people out," she said.

Lakeview resident Paul Bottone, 29, echoed Carey.

"It's surprising, this is a heavily trafficked area."

A person of interest was being questioned in the stabbing, Lemmon said.
