COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Near West Side man chewed through a squad-car seat belt after he was arrested this week because he didn't want to miss his son's birthday, prosecutors said.
Police picked up Lashon Stuckey, 33, after he sold $30 worth of heroin to a man in the 200 block of South Western Avenue about 1:45 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report. The officers had been conducting drug surveillance on the Near West Side.
As police drove Stuckey to a nearby station, Stuckey chewed through his seat belt, causing several hundred dollars worth of damage, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Tuesday.
Stuckey told the officers it was his son's birthday, and he didn't want to miss it, police and prosecutors said.
Stuckey, of the 2300 block of West Jackson Boulevard, was charged with delivery of a controlled substance and criminal damage to government property.
Cook County Judge James Brown ordered Stuckey held in lieu of $75,000 bail.
