BEVERLY — A shooting that rattled Beverly was the first topic of conversation Tuesday night at the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) meeting at Christ the King Parish.

Officers in the Chicago Police Department's Morgan Park District offered additional details on the shooting that was initially reported as taking place at 95th Street and Hamilton Avenue — just blocks away from where the CAPS meeting was held at 9225 S. Hamilton Ave. in Beverly.

News of the shooting that wounded a woman as she drove on 95th Street caused quite the stir in the Southwest Side neighborhood as online commenters voiced both concern and outrage.

Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman, later said the woman actually was shot at 9:15 a.m. at 95th Street near Justine Street in Washington Heights.

Four police officers attended the meeting, including Capt. Randall Darlin. He and others confirmed the woman was shot in Washington Heights and then drove westbound on 95th Street.

When she felt safe, she pulled over and asked a construction worker near Hamilton Avenue for help. The victim is recovering from the incident and seems to be doing well, police said.

The shooting occurred just two blocks from Chicago International Charter School Longwood at 1309 W. 95th St. in Washington Heights. The police officers believe the victim was an unintended target.

The incident likely stemmed from a schoolyard fight between rival gangs, namely the Nate Ville P. Stones and the Oakdale Gangster Disciples. The intended victims were likely three high school students, police said.

Police assured the crowd of just five adult residents, including the moderator, that the shooting was not simply assailants taking random shots at vehicles traveling along 95th Street.

Nobody is in custody and the incident remains under investigation, the police said.
