COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Back of the Yards teen walked up to a police car Monday and confessed to a 2014 robbery, prosecutors said.

Adrian Marentes, 18, told the officers he felt guilty for bringing a .22 caliber gun to Willie's Grocery Store on Jan. 31, 2014 and robbing the place, Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Karr said during a bond hearing Thursday.

Marentes, who was 16 at the time, and an unknown accomplice are accused of stealing $3,000 and an employee's cell phone from the corner store at 4958 S. Wolcott Ave.

According to prosecutors, Marentes first confessed to the robbery two weeks ago when he apologized to the store's owner. But when the owner didn't do anything with the confession, Karr said, Marentes took matters into his own hands.

On Monday, the teen walked up to a squad car and told the officers inside that he pointed a .22 caliber gun at a cashier about 7 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2014, Karr said.

The cashier put in a backpack roughly $3,000 cash, which Marentes and his accomplice shared, according to Marentes' confession. Marentes also took the cashier's cell phone, prosecutors said, and would later identify himself for police in surveillance footage.

During the January attack, both robbers wore masks, according to authorities.

Marentes, of the 4700 block of South Paulina Street, was charged with armed robbery. On Thursday, Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered him held in lieu of $10,000 bail.
