COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Mather High School senior broke a school security guard's nose Tuesday when he head-butted the guard for asking him to leave a classroom, police and prosecutors said.
The incident happened about 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report.
A teacher had asked 18-year-old Theodore Covey to leave the classroom, but he refused, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Thursday.
When the 30-year-old security guard arrived, he saw Covey throwing the teacher's supplies on the floor, the arrest report said.
The guard tried to remove Covey from the classroom, but Covey fought back — head-butting the guard and breaking his nose, according to police and prosecutors. Covey then spit in the guard's face before Covey was eventually detained by police, authorities said.
Covey, of the 1500 block of West Rosemont Avenue, was charged with aggravated battery to a school employee.
On Thursday, Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas said she would release Covey on his own recognizance if the Cook County Sheriff's Office agreed to provide electronic monitoring.
It's unclear whether Covey can return to Mather High School, 5825 N. Lincoln Ave.
