COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man on parole for attempted burglary has been charged in a recent burglary spree spanning Lincoln Park, Lakeview and Rogers Park.
Marcus Jones, 57, was arrested about 1:30 a.m. Thursday when police responded to a burglary-in-progress call at the Northside Community Resources office, 1530 W. Morse Ave., according to an arrest report.
Police found Jones hiding under a desk, the report said. He had placed a laptop, iPad mini and several other items in a cart and was carrying a pry bar. Court documents place the total value of the items at $1,600.
Jones, who is believed to be homeless, was charged with attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was also hit with burglary charges for several cases dating back to mid-April.
The most recent occurred Monday in the 400 block of West Wrightwood Avenue. Prosecutors said Jones forced his way into two offices and took a laptop and digital camera, among other items. During a bond hearing Friday, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said Jones was captured on surveillance footage.
Jones allegedly stole tools, a snowboard, camping equipment and alcohol when he broke into a storage locker in the 3100 block of North Sheffield Avenue over the evening of April 29-30. He was again caught on surveillance footage, Antonietti said.
And on April 19, Jones is accused of breaking into an apartment-building garage in the 900 block of West Belmont Avenue and stealing several items from a resident's 2008 Hummer.
Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Friday ordered Jones held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Antonietti said Jones is on parole for an attempted burglary conviction.
