BUCKTOWN —  After running a red light and hitting a car traveling in the opposite direction — which then hit four parked cars after being struck — the driver of an SUV fled and remains at large, police said.

The incident occurred at 1:33 a.m. Wednesday in the 2000 block of North Damen Avenue, at the intersection of Armitage Avenue, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

The driver of 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV was going east on Armitage Avenue when he or she ran a red light and struck an Acura that was going north on Damen Avenue, Sedevic said.

Sedevic said this caused the Acura to "spin out" and strike four parked cars, causing damage to a Nissan Pathfinder, an Audi A4, a Toyota Corolla, and another Hyundai Santa Fe.

There were no known serious injuries; the driver of the Honda Acura refused medical attention, Sedevic said. One woman and two men were observed fleeing the scene, though Sedevic said it was not clear if they were in the car that began the mishap.

The 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe that started the incident was abandoned at the scene.

All of the damaged cars were parked on north side of Armitage Avenue and since it was hit first, the Nissan Pathfinder had the most damage, on both the front and sides, Sedevic said.

Police are investigating the incident as a hit and run and are seeking the owner of the registered intial vehicle, which does not appear to have been stolen, Sedevic said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Chicago Police Department's Major Accident unit at 312-745-4521.
