RIVER NORTH — The funeral services and visitations for the late Cardinal Francis George will be held April 21-23 at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., the Archdiocese of Chicago announced.

George died Friday morning after a long battle with cancer.

An interfaith service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., and an all-night vigil will be held from 9 p.m. Wednesday night to 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Both will be open to the public.

The funeral mass will be Thursday at 12 p.m., for ticketholders only.

The committal service for George, who grew up in Portage Park, will follow the funeral mass at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines and be open to the public.

"Per the Cardinal's wishes, he will be buried in the George family plot," a written statement from the Archidiocese said.

Pope Francis sent his condolences to Archibishop Blase Cupich via telegram, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced in a press statement Saturday morning.

"I offer heartfelt condolences to you and to the clergy," the telegram read. "I join you in commending the soul of this wise and gentle pastor to the merciful love of God our heavenly Father."
