CHICAGO — City drivers may want to be extra alert this April Fool's Day.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation will begin its citywide street cleaning program Wednesday, and the $60 tickets drivers who fail to move their vehicles between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. face are no joke.
Through November, temporary parking restriction signs will be posted throughout Chicago neighborhoods the day prior to sweeping. Those who fail to move their vehicle will be ticketed.
Some streets also have permanent signs posted, alerting residents to a weekly time slot when the street will be regularly cleaned.
“Street sweeping is an essential service provided by Streets and Sanitation to ensure all neighborhoods streets are clean,” department Commissioner Charles L. Williams said.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said this year Streets and Sanitation is launching an "aggressive" street cleaning campaign to combat accumulated debris and litter leftover from the winter. The department continued to clear streets, alleys, viaducts and curbs as weather allowed during the winter, and cleaned over 5,100 lane miles.
A detailed map of each ward's street-sweeping schedule can be found online through the department's website.
