CHICAGO — Authorities have identified both 23-year-old women who died after the car they were driving struck a semi-truck Sunday morning.

Sonia Vargas, of the 3500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, was the driver of the car and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital on Sunday at 6:08 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Kiarah Lazo, the passenger in the car, of the 5800 block of South Kildare, was also taken to Stroger and pronounced dead Monday evening at 6:20 p.m.

Around 5:20 a.m. Sunday a 2008 Dodge sedan with Vargas and Lazo was headed northbound in the 3100 block of South Damen Avenue when it struck the trailer of a semi coming off the I-55 ramp, also heading north. As the trailer made a left turn, the car struck, police said.

The truck driver was not injured.

The Major Accidents Investigation Unit is still investigating.
