HYDE PARK — As the Danube River approaches the Black Sea, the music changes into something more haunting as it mixes with the spirituality of the Orthodox Church and the dust of the Ottoman Empire.

Those sounds will flow through the International House, 1414 E. 59th St., on the University of Chicago campus for four days starting Thursday with the beginning of the Spring Festival of music and dance of Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean.

The festival kicks off at 8 p.m. with the first of many dance workshops followed by a concert by the Braca Tamburitza Orchestra playing folk songs of the Balkans.

The fest jumps back early at 9 a.m. with more music and dance workshops on styles from such far-flung places as the Republic of Macedonia and Montenegro, a tiny Balkan country whose name literally translates to “the black mountain.”

Every night ends with a party of dancing and music.

Tickets range in price from $8-$30. For more information, click here.
