CHICAGO — A 21-year-old man was charged with murder for shooting and killing a 16-year-old boy last week in Portage Park, police said.

Police say Antwan Elliot, 21, of the 1600 block of North Oak Park Avenue, opened fire on March 15, fatally wounding Giovanni Mathos.

Around 12:52 p.m., Giovanni was walking with two others in the 5800 block of West Patterson Avenue when a car pulled up and people inside began shouting gang slogans. Giovanni, a gang member, according to police, and his companions shouted back, police said.

Elliot got out of the car and shot Giovanni in the head, police said.

Giovanni, of the 5500 block of West Henderson Street, was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 4:39 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Jessica Trudeau was putting her 2-year-old daughter down for an afternoon nap when she heard a muffled boom from the second floor of her Portage Park home.

When she came back downstairs, ready to shoo her 7-year-old daughter outside to play on a beautiful spring afternoon, her front yard had been taken over by nearly a dozen police officers — and Giovanni lay dead right outside her front door.

"It was surreal," Trudeau said after the shooting. "It was my worst nightmare."

Elliot was picked up by police around 6:45 p.m. Saturday when they found a gun on him during a traffic stop in the 2600 block of North Laramie Avenue, police said.

He was charged with three felonies: first-degree murder, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card. He was expected in bond court Tuesday.
