WEST LOOP — A group of men caught a man breaking into cars in the West Loop and helped police arrest him, police confirmed Monday.

Three men were leaving a bar in the 200 block of South Clinton Avenue about 1 a.m. Sunday when they saw a man breaking into three vehicles and stealing items from them, according to Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Adam Smith, one of the three who helped catch the thief, said he was with two friends finishing up at the bar when someone saw a man inside one of his friend's cars. The three friends, all from Bridgeport, jumped into action, Smith said Monday.

The three Bridgeport men grabbed the thief and held him until police arrived, Sweeney said.

"I think the guy saw that my friend had left his window cracked a little bit and maybe he thought the bar was closed. The street was dead," said Smith, 29.

The thief was arrested but charges are still pending, according to police. After his arrest Sunday, the man was transported to Stroger Hospital with minor injuries.
