COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Prosecutors have charged a Little Village woman with murder after police found her 7-month-old granddaughter brutally slain on Monday.
Several news outlets reported that the girl's throat had been slit with a circular saw because she wouldn't stop crying.
Manuela Rodriguez, 52, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder.
Her granddaughter, 7-month-old Rose Herrera, died of multiple blunt force injuries to her head, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. The case was ruled a homicide.
A secondary cause of death was probable suffocation on a sock placed in the girl's mouth, the medical examiner said.
Police found Rose about 9:30 a.m. Monday when officers responded to a 911 call in the 2800 block of South Avers Avenue. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Rodriguez was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with self-inflicted wounds, police said.
She's slated to appear in bond court Wednesday.
