WEST CHATHAM — Monday’s warm weather brought many Chicagoans out of hibernation — to wash their dirty cars.

West Chatham resident Michael Henderson, 71, said the nearly 50-degree weather was too warm to keep him inside after weeks of bitter cold and brutal wind chills. He, along with dozens of others, made a stop at Quality Car wash, 7936 S. Vincennes Ave., near Simeon Career Academy.

“I love this,” he said. “Normally, I stay in when it’s really cold."

And for people like Deante Carter, 30, who is originally from Atlanta, Monday’s weather was a welcome surprise.

“I’m used to the heat and I really can’t stand the cold, and it has been way too cold in Chicago,” the Englewood resident said.

Deloris Harris, 75, said she brought her car to get washed on Monday because the weather was too warm to stay home.

Marquita Williams, 34, said she was glad her four children could finally go outside and play — and shed some of the heavy layers herself.

“I’ve been waiting for this,” Williams said. “I hope the warm weather stays."

Others are grateful for the nice weather, but said residents know it’s Chicago so anything can happen.

“This is Chicago, so people should stop complaining whenever it gets cold," said 75-year-old Deloris Harris, "but this weather is just beautiful.”
