HYDE PARK — The 1,700 pieces of the Museum of Science and Industry’s fairy castle appear to fly back together in a new video of the restoration.

The museum started in May 2013 restoring the 82-year-old castle and a new time-lapse video shows all the artifacts carefully being set back into their exact location in less than three minutes.

The 200 pieces that make up the battlements, chambers and towers were first put back together, with small cranes being necessary for some of the larger pieces. The 1,500 dollhouse-size artifacts, collected from around the world by castle creator Colleen Moore, then needed to be put back into the great hall, chapel and other rooms.

Some of the artifacts were so small, like miniature silverware, that the restorers had to wear masks to avoid accidentally inhaling them, according to the museum.

In all, it took nearly a month to put everything back together, but the entire process appears to only take 2½ minutes in the time lapse.

The castle is now back on display, which is included in the price of general admission.

The museum, 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive, is free for children in February with the purchase of one adult ticket. There is a limit of two children admitted free per one adult ticket.
