CHICAGO — An Edgewater man was charged with attempted murder of police officers on Sunday following an alleged theft of a store in the heart of Andersonville Saturday night.

On Sunday in Central Bond Court, Thomas Thompson, 33, of the 6000 block of North Ridge Avenue, was charged with two felony counts of first-degree murder, plus felony counts of disarm of a police officer and possession of a controlled substance following an alleged theft of a retail store in the 5400 block of North Clark Street on Saturday night.

At about 8 p.m. Saturday, officers viewed a theft in progress at the store and attempted to place Thompson in custody, according to a police report. A struggle ensued and a shot was fired at the officers. Thompson was placed in custody and the weapon was recovered, the report said.

The officers were transported to area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries sustained during the struggle, and Thompson was arrested.

No further information is available at this time.
