COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man on parole for domestic abuse fatally stabbed his girlfriend over the weekend, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Chris Moore, 57, was charged with first-degree murder. Cook County Judge James Brown ordered Moore, who lives in the 11100 block of South Lowe Avenue, held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Prosecutors alleged Moore had been drinking with girlfriend Janice Coleman, 48, and two other people in the 11300 block of South Parnell Avenue when the group split up around noon Saturday.

Coleman tried to leave with an ex-boyfriend, prosecutors said, and Moore became jealous.

He shouted, "You've been drinking with me all morning and you're going to leave with him? I don't think so," Assistant State's Attorney Enrique Abraham said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

As the ex-boyfriend waited outside, he heard Coleman say, "Quit playing, Chris," followed by several thuds, Abraham said. The man told authorities he assumed Coleman had decided to stay with Moore, and left.

Coleman was found about noon the following day, curled in a fetal position near the front door of the residence, Abraham said. She'd been fatally stabbed in her right side and face.

Moore told police Coleman fell down the stairs and hit her head on the radiator, and that he'd tried to clean her up, according to prosecutors.

Police found a bloody eight-inch knife in the kitchen garbage can, Abraham said.

In 2008, Moore was convicted of domestic abuse causing serious harm in Scott County, Iowa. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and paroled to Illinois on April 29, 2013, Abraham said.

Moore has a history of violent convictions, including two for 2004 domestic abuse cases, and one for assaulting a police officer in 2005. In a 1995 attempted-armed robbery case, Moore was convicted of stabbing a victim in the face with a broken bottle and sentenced to 16 years in prison, Abraham said.

According to Moore's attorney, Moore is a Vietnam veteran who served in both the Marines and Air Force. Neither branch could immediately be reached to verify his record. Moore is a grandfather who cares for his elderly mother, the attorney said.
