COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Woodlawn man awaiting trial for a 2014 rape case was charged with a second rape this week.

Prosecutors said Mark Hayes, 29, in early September of 2013 grabbed a woman walking down the street in Washington Park, pulled her into a empty school playground and raped her over the course of several hours.

The woman, then 33, was eventually able to run to her sister's house, where she reported the rape to her family and authorities, Assistant State's Attorney Kim Przekota said during a bond hearing Friday.

DNA collected in a rape kit was a positive match to Hayes, Przekota said.

Hayes is currently in Cook County Jail in connection with an Oct. 8, 2014 rape. In that case, he was ordered held on a $300,000 bond on Nov. 6, 2014. No other information was immediately available in that case.

In the Sept. 6, 2013, rape, the victim was walking near 61st Street and Martin Luther King Drive about 11 p.m. when Hayes grabbed her and pulled her into an empty playground at Sexton Elementary School, 6020 S. Langley Ave.

Hayes raped the woman and forced her to perform oral sex before she was finally able to get away, Przekota said. The woman had never met or seen Hayes before.

Hayes, of the 6100 block of South Drexel Avenue, was charged this week with criminal sexual assault. His bond in the latest charge was set at $750,000 on Friday.
