HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago has renamed its new residence hall for Renee Granville-Grossman, who left the university $44 million when she died in 2012.

The $44 million bequest from Granville-Grossman is the largest in the university’s history and the university said it decided to rename the residence hall in her honor.

The newly dubbed Renee Granville-Grossman Residential Commons opened in 2009 for 800 students at 6031 S. Ellis Ave.

Granville-Grossman grew up in Hyde Park and South Shore and attended the university as an undergraduate, studying linguistics from 1960-63.

“Renee Granville-Grossman’s experience of the College, and her response through this bequest, will help ensure that we can provide and enhance the distinctive opportunities of the College for future generations,” said university President Robert Zimmer, in prepared statement. “We are pleased to be able to honor her and commemorate that inter-generational link by naming this important facility for her.”

The university is currently building a second new residence hall that will also house about 800 students.
