EDGEWATER — Artist Dorothy Hughes completed the installation of her mural — representing the water, trees, architecture and people of Edgewater — at the Berwyn "L" Station this week.
The 5-by-8 foot mural of glazed-and-fired tiles was commissioned by the Chicago Transit Authority in 2013, along with six other pieces in the Jarvis, Morse, Thorndale, Granville, Argyle and Lawrence stations.
"It felt right," Hughes said inside the station Tuesday of when she saw the finished product. Tile placers were hired by the CTA to install the 40 tiles that make up the mural.
Hughes, a long-time Chicago artist, said she hand-glazed the ceramic tiles in her West Town home studio. She also fired them there in her basement kiln.
The blue, green and yellow mural includes raised elements, including leaves and buildings. She said she included the Edgewater Historical Society's building at 5358 N. Ashland Ave.
She said she was happy thousands of commuters would be able to view her work — even in passing — on the back wall of the station at 1121 W. Berwyn Ave.
"This type of public art really gives you an opportunity for exposure," she said.
