CHICAGO — Police found $1 million worth of marijuana in an East Garfield Park man's SUV during a traffic stop, according to a police alert.

James Hargett, 37, of the 2900 block of West Adams Street, has been charged one felony count of possessing more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, a misdemeanor for driving without insurance and failure to carry or display a driver's license. He's also been cited for failing to stop at a stop sign and disobeying a turn signal indicator, the police alert said.

Around 7:15 p.m. Saturday, police tried to pull Hargett over in the 1700 block of North Moody Avenue when they saw him commit a traffic violation while driving out of an alley.

Hargett fled the scene, and then got out of his car in the 6200 block of West Cortland Street and tried to run away, according to a police news release.

Police found Hargett hiding under his porch. After further investigation, officers found 386 pounds of marijuana in his SUV, which police say has an estimated street value of more than $1 million.

Hargett is due in bond court Sunday.
