CHICAGO — An off-duty Cook County sheriff's police officer was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday night in Roscoe Village, police said.
Around 11:30 p.m., the off-duty officer was approached by two men wearing masks in the 1900 block of West Belmont Avenue, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
During the robbery, one of the men opened fire, Sedevic said. The officer returned fire, causing the robbers to run off. No one was wounded during the exchange, Sedevic said.
The thieves made off with a cell phone and cash, Sedevic said.
According to Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd), the officer was an off-duty Cook County sheriff's deputy.
Waguespack said a window at nearby Jahn Elementary School, 3149 N. Wolcott Ave., was hit by a bullet during the exchange of gunfire.
The robbers ran off after the shooting and possibly got into a car.
