CHICAGO — A police officer saved a man from the frigid waters of Lake Michigan Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to a call of a person in the water in the 1100 block of North Lake Shore Drive about 1 p.m., said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

There they found a man in the lake, north of Oak Street Beach.

An officer was "instrumental in saving [the man's] life because he kept him above the water surface" until marine crews could arrive and pull him from the water, Zala said.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with "non-life-threatening injuries," Zala said.

The lake's temperature was estimated at 32 degrees, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A news conference with the officer involved is expected to take place Sunday evening.
