Chicago French Center to Host Vigil for Paris Newspaper Attack Victims

NEAR NORTH SIDE — The Alliance Française de Chicago will host a candlelight vigil in memory of the 12 people killed in the vicious attack on a Parisian newsroom Wednesday morning.

The vigil will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the local French Consulate, 810 N. Dearborn St. Consul General Vincent Floreani will offer a few words, according to an event notice posted on Facebook. 

"Please join us as we commemorate the victims of the attack, stand in solidarity in defense of free speech and journalism, and protest against all forms of violence against the innocent," the Consulate said in the event notice. 

Two masked gunmen stormed the Paris office of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and killed 10 staffers and two police officers on Wednesday morning, according to reportsEleven others were wounded, and French police have identified three suspects as they continue to search for the shooters, according to Reuters.

Some 11,350 Chicagoans trace their ancestry to France, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
