CHICAGO — A 26-year-old man stabbed his mom to death Monday night because she was always putting him down and told him he needed to get a girlfriend, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Andre Brown was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in the death of his mother, 54-year-old Damita Collins.

Brown stabbed Collins in her chest and slashed her in her neck in their home in the 3500 block of West 77th Place in Ashburn, authorities said. Police found a bloody butcher knife in the kitchen, Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said.

Collins was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:11 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police found Brown at a relative's home, where he had blood on his clothing, shoes and hands and cuts on his hands and face, Santini said.

While being interviewed by detectives, Brown admitted to stabbing his mother because of her criticism, and said he put the knife back into the butcher block in the kitchen before fleeing the house, Santini said.
