LOGAN SQUARE — The former Provenance Food and Wine space has a new tenant, according to a news release posted regarding the vacated space.

As rumored in August, farm-to-table restaurant The General Restaurant & Mercantile, 2528 N. California Ave., is coming to Logan Square this spring featuring a cross-cultural Mexican and southern soul menu in addition to a general store.

The General will feature in-house smoked meats, handmade tortillas and an array of homemade salsas, sauces and a boutique grocer specializing in packaged goods and daily staples such as milk, eggs, seasonal produce and locally canned foods, according to a news release posted on the upcoming storefront.

The General will be led by executive chef Anthony Mugica, a 25-year restaurant industry veteran and longtime Logan Square resident.

Mugica spent years in South Carolina mastering southern BBQ in order to create his unique blend of Mexican and southern soul food, according to the release.

“Our concept will allow for guests to truly engage the total experience by combining great flavored meats with handmade tortillas,” Mugica said.

Mugica also cut his teeth on the touring band circuit, according to the release, catering for music groups such as The Dave Matthews Band, The Black Keys and Bare Naked Ladies.

The head chef is a “guru of the Bloody Mary,” the statement boasts, and The General will feature “the creation of the perfect Bloody Mary Bar, for those in need on weekends.

The farm-to-table taqueria will be the first of its kind in Logan Square, according to Mugica — following in the footsteps of Logan Square favorite Provenance, which was forced out of its space after eight years in the neighborhood in August, according to owners of the former outlet.

The General aims to be a one-stop-shop for customers looking for a variety of goods  — “a communal destination for neighborhood merriment,” according to owners Eric Ganz and Bryan Keirman.
