CHICAGO — Four men beat and robbed a man on the Red Line because the man only gave them $5 for a basketball team they were collecting money for, police said Friday.

The incident occurred on Dec. 7 at 3:08 p.m. on a Red Line train traveling southbound between 47th Street and Garfield Boulevard, according to a police alert.

While the train was moving, one of four men asked a man, 21, to give money to a basketball team, the alert said.

The victim gave them $5, but the man was not satisfied, police said. The man became "irate" and harassed the victim for more money.

The victim refused to give him more money, which led the man to hit the 21-year-old and steal his iPod, police said. The rest of the men then "joined the fray," and stole an undisclosed amount of money from the victim, according to the alert.

The men then got off at the 55th Street station and ran away.

Police describe the suspects as black men between the ages of 17-20, between 5-foot-11 and 6-feet, and between 160-175 pounds.

They urged anyone with information to call detectives at 312-747-8382.
