CHICAGO — Maybe it won't snow so much this Christmas Eve after all.

A snowstorm headed for the area will end up dumping most of the snow in areas east of Chicago, though the city could end up with a couple inches of snow Wednesday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Nelson.

"One positive thing with this system going further east is that it won't hamper holiday travel as much as it could," Nelson said.

In the city, rain will shift to snow sometime Wednesday afternoon .

Chicago has only had 2.9 inches of snow this winter, Nelson said. By this time last year, 10.3 inches had already fallen.
