HYDE PARK — The Renaissance Society will host a walk-through of its last exhibit during its 100th anniversary year on Jan. 7.

The museum on the University of Chicago campus at 5811 S. Ellis Ave. will lead a 6 p.m. tour of a work commissioned by Los Angeles-based artist Mathias Poledna.

The installation Poledna unveiled on Dec. 7 is part artwork and part rehab. He has removed much of the infrastructure the gallery used to run electricity and hang lights and the temporary walls used to display artwork.

The gallery said in an announcement of the exhibit that the work was partially to mark the end of the institution’s first century of work and usher in a new direction in curating shows.

Poledna has replaced the gallery’s infrastructure with a new 35mm film, “Substance,” which “contemplates the material properties and frames of vision of a highly recognizable luxury commodity in a series of extremely close-range and slow tracking shots,” according to the gallery.

The exhibit runs through Feb. 8.
