COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — When police arrested a South Side man wanted for two Beverly burglaries, he was carrying a backpack stuffed with items he stole at other houses, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Jenero January, 42, was arrested Sunday after authorities said he burglarized two Beverly homes and hawked stolen jewelry and a laptop at pawn shops.

January was carrying a backpack crammed with a handgun, nine rounds and several items believed to have been stolen during other burglaries, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said in court Tuesday.

According to prosecutors, January broke into a house in the 10500 block of South Talman Avenue on Nov. 3. Court records show he took a cell phone, laptop, jewelry and a Rolex.

A month later, on Dec. 5, January made off with more than $20,000 in stolen goods when he burglarized a house in the 10400 block of South Seeley Avenue, Scaduto said. January took a laptop, iPad, jewelry, Kenneth Cole purse and credit cards, according to court records.

Scaduto said police were notified when January tried to sell stolen jewelry and a laptop in separate pawn shops. The items' serial numbers had been registered as stolen.

January, who lives in the 6600 block of South Michigan Avenue, was charged with felony burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, theft of more than $500 and not having an FOID card.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered January held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
