CHICAGO — A Drug Enforcement Agency officer was critically injured Sunday after a suspect in a drug investigation hit him with a vehicle in Ashburn.

The officer, a special agent assigned to the Chicago division, was hit by a vehicle in the 8200 block of South Kedzie Avenue about 12:50 p.m., authorities said.

A DEA spokesman said agents were conducting an investigation on the Southwest Side and attempted to stop a vehicle suspected of transporting cocaine. When officers tried to arrest the driver at a gas sation, the driver drove away, hitting the agent, who was on foot, as well as two other vehicles.

The agent sustained a heady injury and a broken leg, the DEA said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, said Cmdr. Will Knight, a Fire Department spokesman.

Agents fired shots during the incident, and hit a suspect, who is in custody and being treated at another hospital, the DEA said.

The vehicle was later found abandoned. The DEA said it discovered drugs in the vehicle.
