EDISON PARK — Heat was restored to about 80 homes in Edison Park Thursday evening after crews hit a gas main and caused a fire Wednesday night, officials said.
All but two of the nearly 80 homes had their heat restored by 5 p.m. Thursday after 25-member crews go house-to-house to check their meters and restore service, said Peoples Gas spokeswoman Jennifer Block.
Gas crews were waiting for the owners of the other two homes to return, Block said.
No one was injured when the fire erupted at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday after a crew from a "third-party contractor" hit the gas main in the parkway of the 6700 block of north Oconto Avenue, igniting the natural gas, Block said.
The Chicago Fire Department put out the fire, but the water infiltrated the gas pipe, forcing crews to shut off gas service to about 80 homes, Block said.
Crews started to restore service to homes at 4 a.m. Thursday, Block said. It took about a half-hour to restore gas service to each home because of the extreme cold, she added.
