NORWOOD PARK — The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians named a Resurrection Medical Center doctor the teacher of the year, praising her personal touch with patients and co-workers.

Sajjini Thomas, the obstetrics coordinator at Resurrection Medical Center, has been a doctor at the Norwood Park hospital since 1997. She is also teaches at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and the North Chicago-based Chicago Medical School.

Known to younger doctors at the hospital as "Mama Thomas" or "Amachi" — which means grandmother in Malayalam — Thomas strives to bring a personal touch to all of her patients and students, the academy said.

“Technology and computers can never substitute for the human side of the doctor-patient relationship," Thomas said.

The chairwoman of the hospital's family violence rotation, Thomas teaches advanced life support in obstetrics.
