NORTH CENTER — If Chicago is the Second City, why do so many theater productions debut here in advance of their New York runs?

Case in point: American Theater Company's premiere of "The Humans," the latest work from Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright Stephen Karam ("Sons of the Prophet").

Just in time for the holidays, "The Humans" centers on one family's Thanksgiving celebration — in all its hilarity and horror.

Previews begin Nov. 14 and run through Nov. 16 at the theater company's home at 1909 W. Byron St.

The play officially opens at 7 p.m. Nov. 17. "The Humans" will run through Dec. 21, with performances Thursdays through Sundays (no shows on Thanksgiving or Black Friday).

Tickets cost $38-$48 and can be bought online or by calling the box office at 773-409-4125.

Following its Chicago run, "The Humans" will move on to New York's Roundabout Theatre in 2015.
