HYDE PARK — Chef Matthias MergesA10 won the Michelin Bib Gourmand award on Wednesday.

The Hyde Park restaurant was one of 11 additions to the list of restaurants where Michelin reviewers frequently eat and where a two-course dinner and a glass of wine can be had for less than $40. The award went to 59 restaurants this year.

"Our one-year anniversary is today, so it was a really nice gift for the team for all their hard work," Merges said.

The Italian-inspired restaurant at 1462 E. 53rd St. is the only winner south of Chinatown.

Merges said the award helps show others that the move to the South Side was worth it.

The award is the first nod for a chef behind A10 and Yusho in Hyde Park and Billy Sunday and Yusho in Logan Square, who local food reviewers have said is overdue for Michelin recognition.

The recognition from the food guide could mean Merges could see his first Michelin star next week when the winners are announced.

Merges said it was nice to be seen in the ranks of top restaurants, but stopped short of predicting he would get his first Michelin star next week.

"We'll see what happens and if Yusho on the North Side has a chance," Merges said.
