CHICAGO — Friday's wintry weather created massive waves that hammered the lakefront, spilling onto Lake Shore Drive and damaging a barge at Navy Pier.
Though the water eventually subsided, it devastated the lakefront path north of Downtown, tearing it up and pushing blocks of concrete onto grassy areas.
Gold Coast resident Jeff Eisinger, 26, who took photos of the aftermath Saturday, said he was surprised to see the damage caused by the waves.
"It's not uncommon for the patchwork to come up, but I've never seen entire chunks of the actual main trail come up," he said. "I thought it was pretty incredible."
"Obviously, you see how powerful water can be, but as far as Lake Michigan, it’s not something people are used to seeing, waves that have that much force," he said.
A photo taken by Eisinger was posted to Reddit and generated a conversation about how the path could be improved after the damaging waves.
Portions of the lakefront path are closed, a Chicago Park District spokeswoman said, and repairs will begin Monday.
