CHICAGO — Separating walkers from bikers on the Lakefront Trail is the most popular idea on a list of 1,600 community comments about the planned $1 billion makeover of North Lake Shore Drive.
The team behind the planned overhaul, which includes both the Chicago and Illinois departments of transportation, released the top 20 ideas Chicagoans brought forward at two community events held in April and July.
Second to separating cyclists from pedestrians along the Lakefront Trail was improving public transit service along Lake Shore Drive.
One of the most requested ideas was installing lanes dedicated to express buses, also known as bus rapid transit. Some people proposed installing light rail.
Improving east-west pedestrian and bike access from the drive and adding green space around the road were two other popular suggestions.

Construction isn't expected to start until after 2018, when the agencies expect to obtain approval for the project.
