EDGEWATER — Jim Bachor's mosaic was installed at the Thorndale "L" station this month.
The artwork, entitled "Thrive," was designed by Bachor and fabricated in Munich, Germany, the 50-year-old artist said Wednesday.
"I've never birthed a baby but, my God, it was such an incredibly long process," said Bachor, who was among seven artists chosen by the Chicago Transit Authority to create art for seven stations from Uptown to Rogers Park.
"To finally see that thing in person, you almost couldn't believe it. It almost took your breath away."
The Mayfair resident designed the glass mosaic of plants growing from the base of the station's columns and blooming into different icons that represent the neighborhood, such as a painter's palette, a sand pail and a school building.
He said he traveled to Munich last summer to tweak his design with the manufacturer, Franz Mayer.
"They nailed it," Bachor said. "I couldn't really ask for a better result."
