LAKEVIEW — How convincing is the science behind "Jurassic Park?" Could a shark really go on a rampage like the monster in "Jaws"?
The Field Museum will partner with the Music Box Theatre for a new screening series, "Cinema Science," which aims to answer these questions by lending museum researchers to lecture on the real principles behind sci-fi flicks.
Monthly screenings through December will tackle "Jurassic Park," "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Jaws" at the Lakeview theater at 3733 N. Southport Ave.
Before each screening, a museum scientist will deliver a short lecture about the accuracy of the science featured in each movie.
After the films, Field staff will host a question-and-answer forum, allowing guests to speak directly with specialists.
The "Jurassic Park" screening will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and speaking will be Pete Makovicky, the Field Museum's associate curator of dinosaurs.
"Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark" will be screened at noon Nov. 9 with a discussion led by Bill Parkinson, associate curator of Eurasian anthropology.
At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3, the Music Box will screen "Jaws," and Kevin Feldheim, manager of the Pritzker Laboratory for Molecular Systematics and Evolution, will be the featured speaker.
