MCKINLEY PARK — Fans of Chef Daniel Sarkiss' fresh Mediterranean food will soon have a new option to get their fix.

Sarkiss is opening a second outpost of his popular Bridgeport restaurant, Zaytune Mediterranean Grill, at 3500 S. Western Ave. It's expected to open Oct. 1.

"I think I've grown quite a bit over there. … Anytime I try to do a little something, it's just too much strain on the staff and the kitchen space is just not enough. I'm going to start playing around a little now that I've got some space," he said.

That means adding specials like grape leaves, Middle Eastern meatballs and new desserts to the menu of favorites like shawarma, falafel, soups and the flatbread that's baked fresh every day.

Like the Bridgeport spot, the second Zaytune will be BYOB.

Street parking is available along Western and additional parking will be available behind a building just across 35th Street.

The new Zaytune replaces Jimmy's Fry House, a short-lived fried fish and chicken venture.

Sarkiss is hoping to add new flavor to an area dominated by chains, taco stands and hot dog joints.

"You know, Morgan Street had no foot traffic when I opened five years ago. It was brutal. Everyone was like 'Don't open there, you're crazy.'" he said of the Bridgeport strip. "Now look at it. I'm trying to bring that same spark over here."

The McKinley Park location for Zaytune is expected to open Oct. 1, but Sarkiss said it's a good idea to call first to check at 773-523-3500.
