BACK OF THE YARDS — A teenage girl was fatally struck by an Orange Line train Tuesday evening, and authorities have ruled the death a suicide.

About 6:12 p.m., a southbound Orange Line train traveling toward Midway Airport struck the 17-year-old girl after she jumped in front of the train near the Western Street Station, CTA and fire department officials said.

The girl was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after 7 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Emergency officials initially reported a man had been struck and killed.

Orange Line service between the Midway and the 35th/Archer stations was suspended following the accident. Crews were working to get passengers off the train that struck the teen, said CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase.

Chase said shuttle service was provided between stations while crews removed the girl's body. Normal rail service resumed after 10 p.m.
