LINCOLN PARK — A grassroots effort to build up support for small businesses is growing in Lincoln Park.

Nearly 20 businesses have joined the "Lincoln Park Local" initiative to draw attention to both new and established businesses in the neighborhood.

The businesses are hosting their monthly event Sept. 4 on the 700 block of West Belden Avenue in front of Swirlz Cupcakes and Johnny's Beef & Gyros.

The movement began in March as a small community open house with seven businesses.

The businesses involved held a number of monthly events, but next Thursday's will be the largest of its kind and will be rebranded under the Lincoln Park Local name.

The food and drink-centric event will allow residents of the neighborhood to get to meet the owners of their local businesses as well as sample their goods for free.

"We are just trying to underscore the mindset of local, independently owned, small operators," said Eddie Lakin, owner of Edzo's Burger Shop.

The event will run from 4-7 p.m.

Participating businesses include Dilly Lily flowers, Weddings 826, Swirlz Cupcakes, Johnny's Beef & Gyros, Insomnia Cookies, Edzo's, Nails Boutique, Oh Olive, CityGrounds coffee bar, Rickshaw Republic, The Social Table, Underthings, Flirty Girl Fitness and Pilates ProWorks.

Real estate agent Debra Dobbs and artist Diane Bronstein will also participate.

Raffle prizes include the chance to be on the court during a DePaul University basketball game, a custom piece of artwork and various fitness club freebies, goodie bags and gift cards.

"I think that we were hoping to bring it to this level," Lakin said.
