PORTAGE PARK — Free tickets are available for two performances of "Crossing Six Corners: School Days" by the Filament Theatre Ensemble

The performances on Sept. 6 will bring the classroom memories of Northwest Side residents to life as part of the fourth installment of the ensemble's "Crossing Six Corners" series.

Heather Cherone discusses the show's inspiration:

On Sunday, the ensemble gathered stories from those who went to school on the Far Northwest Side, those whose kids go to school on the Northwest Side, or who teach or volunteer. It is now hard at work translating those memories into the performance.

The first installment of "Crossing Six Corners" in February 2013 was the theater group's first show in its new home at Six Corners, which was once one of the most prestigious shopping districts in the city.

The second installment focused on stories based at the Sears store at Irving Park Road and Cicero and Milwaukee avenues as part of the 75th anniversary of the mammoth retailer.

The third installment told the stories of the places where Portage Park residents live, work and play by focusing on the buildings at Six Corners.

Filament plans to stage performances of "Crossing Six Corners" twice a year for the foreseeable future, each with a different focus, thanks to an $1,800 grant from the Illinois Arts Council, group members said.

Tickets are available online for both the 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. performances of "Crossing Six Corners: School Days" on Sept. 6 at 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Attendees are asked to contribute a $5 donation.
